Course Description

Chain analysis is an integral part of Dialectical Behavior Therapy. The ideology behind
the Chain Analysis is that and any behavior can be understood as a series of linked components.
These links are “chained” together, as they follow in succession one after the other; one link in
the chain leads to another. The purpose of a chain analysis is to figure out which link is leading
to the behaviors, what prompts it, what its function is, what is interfering with the resolution of
the problem, and what aids are available to help solve the problem.

A chain analysis is an invaluable tool for assessing a behavior to be changed. As it
provides essential information for understanding the events that lead up to particular problem
behavior. Many attempts to solve a problem fail because the problem at hand is not fully
understood and assessed. By conducting repeated chain analyses, a person can identify the
pattern linking different components of a behavior together. Figuring out what the links are is
the first step in finding solutions to stopping the problem behavior. When any of the links of the
chain can be broken, the problem behavior can be stopped.

The majority of individuals who utilize DBT will most likely have at least one target
behavior. The target behavior will be what you would like to decrease to live a life worth living.
It is vital to address these behaviors and be completely open and honest about them when in
treatment as it can interfere with your overall recovery process.Dialectical Behavioral Therapy
(DBT) will generally require a chain each time an interfering target behavior is used. No matter
whether this is in individual or group therapy, you will often find yourself doing quite a few of
these.

The DBT Chain Analysis Training:
In this training, you will learn the necessary components of a DBT chain analysis, how to
successfully conduct a chain analysis in your therapy sessions and to integrate other key DBT
strategies necessary to reach success.

These added key interventions include interweaving validation techniques and behavioral
principles. You will learn how to use a completed chain analysis to identify the function(s) of
your client’s behaviors which will increase your success in identifying effective prevention and
replacement skills (in DBT, this is known as solution analysis) with clients.

After this training, you will be able to assess any situation or incident that occurred between
sessions and obtain information you may not have gotten using other assessment techniques.

During this training, you will have opportunities to practice using all of these necessary
strategies under the guidance of an expert, so you leave with the confidence to implement what
you learned. This training will elevate collaboration between you and your clients, which
everyone wants from healthcare providers today.

Following this training you will be able to:
● Complete chain analyses within your individual therapy sessions
● Integrate the use of validation techniques while completing chain analyses
● Behaviorally analyze chain analyses to understand the function of the behavior being
assessed
● Use chain analyses to create effective replacement skills with the goal of reducing and
eliminate problematic behaviors and help your clients reach their identified goals
● The Chain Analysis training is a specialized training, which is a requirement for those
seeking DBT Certification.
